Mrs. Johnnie Maxine Sheffield

Johnnie Maxine Sheffield, 97, of Port Neches, Texas passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022 at her granddaughter’s home surrounded by her loved ones.
Johnnie was born August 11, 1924 in Farrsville, TX. It was there in Newton County where she met Milton Q. Sheffield. They were married on July 26, 1942 and enjoyed forty-five years together until his death in 1987. In 1946 they moved to Port Neches after Milton returned from serving in WW11 and Milton worked at the Texaco plant. Milton and Johnnie opened Sheffield’s Grocery in 1954 in Port Neches which they ran until 1969 when they received an amazing offer from a major grocery chain and sold the store.
Johnnie was a long time member of Southside Baptist Church and was involved in many ministries, but deeply treasured teaching the Ladies Sunday School Class from 1958 until 2020. She also served on various committees such as several pastor search committees, she sang in choir, taught Jr. Department Training Union, was active in WMU, and served on the bereavement committee.
Johnnie was very passionate about maintaining a beautiful yard. She continually looked for ways to improve and add something new whether it was a plant or something new in her vegetable garden.
After Milton’s death she had time and opportunity to travel domestically and internationally. She enjoyed seeing many beautiful landscapes and wonders of God’s creation.
Johnnie loved her PNG Indians and was a season ticket holder until 2019, well over 60 years. She rarely missed a game whether the game was local or out of town, in season or playoffs, and in rain or sunshine. Johnnie also loved to play games like Forty-two, Mexican Train, Hand and Foot, or Tic with her friends and family.
Johnnie is preceded in death by her parents John Thomas Holmes and Lois Dickson Holmes; husband, Milton Sheffield, son B. Milton “Butch” Sheffield, brother Sherlock and wife Rita Holmes, brother-in-law and sister-law James and Mildred Ferguson.
Johnnie is survived by daughter-in-law Melanie Sheffield of Spring, TX., granddaughter Brittney Aparicio and husband Bon, of Spring, TX., sister Lillian Morgan of Nederland, TX., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Southside Baptist Church in Port Neches followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Aaron Little officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Zion Hill Cemetery in Jasper County under the direction of Levingston Funeral Home Port Neches.
