Mrs. Linda Karen Matts

July 8, 1952 — April 6, 2022

Linda Karen Matts, 69, went to be with Jesus on April 6th, 2022. She was born on July 8th, 1952 in Pasadena, TX to Mary Jo Lista (formerly Bennett) and James Bennett, Sr. Linda grew up in Orangefield, TX and was a resident of Port Neches, TX for most of her life. She graduated from Orangefield High School in 1970 and went on to earn a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education from Lamar University. She married the love of her life, Floyd Matts, on July 22nd, 1978. They were married for 43 years until her passing.

Linda was a teacher for over 40 years, most of which was at Vidor High School as a Government and Economics teacher. The only thing she loved more than teaching was spending time with her family and donating her time and talents at her church, First United Methodist Church of Port Neches. She was a lifelong learner, avid reader, and loved crossword puzzles, crocheting, sewing and critical thinking games.

But more than all these, her family wishes the world to know she was kind, loving, and brave in the face of challenges and adversity. She clung to her faith in God and considered herself a student of God’s word, ever trying to learn more and grow closer to Jesus.

Linda is preceded in death by her mother, father, sister, brother, and 1 grandchild. She is survived by her husband Floyd, daughter Amanda Chism (Timothy), daughter Chelsea Joseph (Chris), granddaughter Adaline Joseph, brothers Mike Bennett (Peggy), Bob Bennett, Pete Lista (Lori), and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 9th, at First United Methodist Church of Port Neches (1826 Nall Street) from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., with a memorial service immediately following from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Linda wished her memorial to be a celebration of life, so we ask participants to wear bright colors, especially Linda’s favorite color, lime green. Flowers may be sent to First Methodist Port Neches. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Rotary Club of Vidor’s green bus mobile library. Contact sally8363@aol.com for more information on donations. May tomorrow’s leaders cultivate Linda’s same love for reading.
